Pain Management

RMC's Center for Pain Management strives to improve the quality of life for our patients suffering from acute and chronic pain.

A team of healthcare professionals plays an active role in pain management for our clients from diagnosis to recommended pain treatment.  New patients to our clinic must be referred by a healthcare provider.  The physician's office must call to arrange the first appointment so patient information regarding prior care can be obtained.  Copies of all relevant medical records and tests (especially x-rays and MRI's) should be sent prior to the visit or with the patient.

What is acute pain?

Acute pain is short-term, severe pain normally attributed to a recent illness, injury, or surgery.  The level of pain intensity gradually improves with the healing process.

What is chronic pain?

Chronic pain is described as prolonged pain that ranges from mild to severe and may be constant or recurring.

Uncontrolled, unrelieved pain can lead to problems such as a loss of function, sleep problems, and depression.  Everyone has the right to have their pain assessed and treated.  Our team of healthcare professionals take your pain seriously and treat pain patients with dignity and respect.  Your pain will be thoroughly assessed and promptly treated.  You will be informed every step of the way, from cause, possible treatments, benefits, risks and costs associated with each.

You will actively participate in decisions regarding your pain management plan.  Your pain may be reassessed and treatment adjusted to meet your needs.  You may be referred to a pain specialist if your pain persists.  You have the right to clear and prompt answers to your questions.  We recognize your right to the necessary time you may need to make a thoughtful, informed decision to accept or refuse recommended treatment.

Communicate Your Pain

Pain Assessment Scale.jpg

When you feel pain, will you be able to describe it to your doctor or nurse?  Is there a way to communicate exactly what you are feeling so they will understand?

The Pain Assessment Scale may be a useful tool in accurately communicating your pain.
