This experienced, professional and personal staff is dedicated to providing area high school and collegiate athletes with the latest and most effective care possible to ensure a safe, effective and timely return to their chosen sport. The program is made possible by cooperation with local area family practice physicians. Their goals are:

  • Appropriate communication with parents, physicians, and coaches regarding plan of care for the injured athlete
  • Early detection and diagnosis of sports related injuries.
  • Education for athletes and coaches
  • Provide school and athletic teams with event and practice coverage to ensure proper care of acute sports injuries.
  • Sports physical therapy to help the athlete rehabilitate and progress back to competition when appropriate.

Urinary Incontinence

Adults, as well as children, may experience an uncontrolled loss of urine, called urinary incontinence. Weakness of the pelvic floor muscles may cause incontinence (leakage). Aging, pregnancy, childbirth, chronic constipation and chronic coughing can weaken the pelvic floor muscles. If you notice urine leaking when you cough, lift, sneeze or exercise, you may have the most common type of leakage, called stress incontinence.

A physical therapist can provide:

  • Instruction in strengthening exercises or "Kegels" for the weakened pelvic floor muscles
  • A home exercise program designed to meet your needs
  • Correct lifting and moving techniques and instructions
  • Instructions on keeping a bladder diary and move toward normal voiding habits
  • Suggestions on which foods to avoid, that may be irritating to the bladder

Lymphedema & Venous Insufficiency

Lymphedema is a chronic swelling in any area of the body where the lymphatic system is compromised.  Lymphedema can develop at any time (months or years) after surgery or radiation.  Usually it is triggered by a new injury or trauma.  Regional Medical Center has two therapists certified to treat Lymphedema and Venous Insufficiency which may include post mastectomy or lower extremity.

Edema treatment involves:

  • Manual massage to reroute the lymphatic uptake.
  • Compression bandaging and stockings or sleeves to control the edema once it us under control.
  • Patient education for life long control is provided and is key to self management once the patient is discharged.
